Attractions

No trip to Moeraki is complete without a visit to our famous Moeraki Boulders. Just a short drive from the tavern will bring you to the beautiful Koekohe Beach, home to more than 50 spherical boulders. The biggest of these is over 2 meters wide and has been forming for about 4 million years.

For the avid fishers, Moeraki offers fishing throughout the year, with plenty of blue cod, crayfish and groper. There are a number of companies offer charter boats, that will not only allow you to fish but also to view some of our incredible sea life.

Walks and Wildlife

There are many great walks around Moeraki, such as the easy walk to Kātiki Point Lighthouse. The Kātiki Point Walking Track is around 800m.

This can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour but will give you the opportunity to see some of our beautiful and unique wildlife. If you are lucky you might get to see both the Yellow-eyed and the Blue Penguins, as well as Fur Seals and the native birds that call Moeraki home. Just remember not to touch or feed them but do take plenty of photos from a distance.

You can also walk up to the Moeraki Lookout from the Moeraki Tavern. This is about a 10 minute walk, 20 minutes return.  Here you can see all the way to Kakanui and to Shag Point. Just make sure you take something warm if it’s a windy day.
